Why R32 is the Future of Air-to-Water Heat Pumps

As of 2025, the U.S. has mandated that all new heat pumps must use R32 refrigerant — and for good reason. Arctic Heat Pumps is leading this transition with advanced R32-based air-to-water heat pump systems that are not only more environmentally responsible but also outperform older R410A systems in every meaningful way.

01

30% Lower Global Warming Potential (GWP)

R32 has a GWP of 675 — a dramatic reduction compared to R410A’s GWP of 2,088. This means R32 systems are significantly better for the environment, reducing long-term climate impact while complying with new federal regulations. R32 are the future of Heat pumps in North America

02

Up to 10% More Efficient

R32 systems offer superior thermodynamic performance and uses less energy. This translates into lower energy bills, faster heat delivery, and a system that works harder for less. When efficiency matters, R32 is the clear winner over R410A.

03

Higher Operating Temperatures — Up to 60°C (140°F)

Unlike R410A units that struggle with higher output temps, R32 heat pumps from Arctic Heat Pumps can deliver up to 60°C. That makes them ideal for radiant floor heating, domestic hot water, and retrofits with high-temp radiators.

04

Easier, Cleaner Maintenance

R32 is a single-component refrigerant, unlike the blended R410A. This makes it easier to recover, recycle, and reuse during servicing — reducing maintenance complexity and environmental risk.

05

Better Cooling

Arctic R32 heat pumps use a completely redesigned internal stainless steel/cooper plate heat exchanger. Unlike the tube in shell heat exchangers on R410a heat pumps the plate heat exchanger is substantially more efficient at transferring energy. This is most noticeable in the cooling cycle providing a substantial improvement in cooling performance.

06

Uses Less Refrigerant = Lower Cost of Ownership

Because of R32’s superior properties, less refrigerant is needed for the same performance. That means fewer pounds of gas, smaller leaks (if any), and lower costs when repairs or refills are necessary.
